In seismic sequence stratigraphic studies, we analyze seismic reflection patterns in the context of a chronostratigraphic framework. In OpendTect, such frameworks are defined by a HorizonCube, which consists of a dense set of horizons representing Relative Geologic Time. The SSIS (Sequence Stratigraphic Interpretation System) plugin is an add-on that uses HorizonCube input to decompose depositional systems over geologic time.
In greenfield exploration plays, this type of analysis helps in finding stratigraphic traps. In studies of existing fields, detailed chronostratigraphic correlations yield better reservoir models on which multi-million-dollar field development investments are based. HorizonCube-SSIS studies have proved to work in siliciclastic settings, in carbonate settings and in mixed environments.
In today’s video, we show how we unraveled the depositional history of a carbonate buildup in a greenfield exploration play. Ultimately the interval of interest is decomposed into a set of systems tracts. The study by Geert de Bruin and others was published in First Break Vol. 25 [2007].
